BERND FASCHING – „WESTWERK“
An experimental arrangement in the field of art,
St. Stephan’s Cathedral, Vienna from Sep 22 to Dec 17 2000
The “Westwerk” is a western investigation of the Occidental culture. Here, where history has been constructed, where the dominant shift towards progress has often led to great catastrophes but nonetheless always contained enormous potential, emerges a new arrangement which reflects upon the historical continuity as well as the historical breaks of the site.
The construction site “Westwerk” introduces the oldest rooms of the St. Stephan’s – the „Forest of Columns“ through which one passes and the surrounding bronze wall pieces all relate to the 13th century Romanesque architecture.
The “Bible Boards” and “Bible Barrels” are, in addition to the “Shrine for an Electronic Relic Shield of David version” and the painting “Ani ve Hitler – Hitler and Me” a central experimental arrangement constructed for the healing of the deep wound of the Occidental culture. Above everything looms a Jewish headstone.
To reach the “Vienna Pillows” one must cross a sea of glass fragments – the pile shards of a culture before which we once again stand. This “ocean of crystals” is an audio-visual formation. With each step the visitor contributes to the composition of the experimental arrangement “Westwerk”.
The roots of Christianity are in Judaism. But, for almost 2.000 years Christianity has tried to violently free itself from these roots. If this connection is successfully destroyed then the healthy (im)pulse would disappear. And illness would spread. It is this conflict, that characterizes our entire culture.
Sometime we will awake and life will begin.
Once again, it depends on us to recharge our creativity with the traditional structures, to prduce a counterweight to the destructive forces.
